What are affirmations, benefits with examples

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often, and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes.

You might consider affirmations to be unrealistic "wishful thinking." But try looking at positive affirmations this way: many of us do repetitive exercises to improve our physical health, and affirmations are like exercises for our mind and outlook. These positive mental repetitions can reprogram our thinking patterns so that, over time, we begin to think – and act – differently.

How to frame and practice affirmations?

  1. Frame your affirmations in the present tense - Speak affirmations as if its already happening . Some of the best affirmations can begin with “I am….."
  2. Speak about what you do want - Do not use negatives in your affirmation. Your subscious mind does not recognise negatives. So if you say, ‘don’t shut yourself off to new opportunities’, all your mind hears is ‘shut yourself off…’ Instead, try saying ‘I am open to new opportunities’
  3. Write down your affirmations – Journaling has great power and writing down your affirmations adds an extra layer of depth to it.
  4. Practice infront of the mirror – Practicing affirmations infront of the mirror is a very powerful way to start changing your self image
  5. Do it with action – Doing affirmation infront of a mirror clubbed with action is a proven way to get faster results.
